Existem hoje nas prisões israelitas pelo menos dez mil Palestinianos. As autoridades Israelitas olham para estes "prisioneiros de segurança" como assassinos e criminosos. As suas sentenças têm muitas vezes a duração de várias vidas. Para os Palestinianos, ao contrário, eles são heróis e mártires que lutaram pela liberdade de um país ocupado. Tendo obtido uma autorização especial para filmar no interior de algumas das principais prisões de alta-segurança israelitas, o realizador Shimon Dotan descobriu algo que o surpreendeu: as prisões israelitas transformaram-se no campo de formação da próxima geração de líderes palestinianos. O filme tem sido criticado por israelitas conservadores, mas também tem servido de instrumento para que outros defendam a introdução da pena capital nos tribunais de Israel. "Hot House" é provavelemente o filme mais importante feito até hoje sobre o conflito israelo-palestiniano e sobre o carácter inultrapassável de qualquer conflito onde um dos lados (neste caso uma parte do povo palestiniano) acredita que a vida não tem qualquer valor nas condições em que está sujeito a viver.

Er zitten momenteel circa tachtigduizend Palestijnen in Israëlische gevangenissen. Ze worden 'Veiligheidsgevangenen' genoemd. Voor de meeste Israëli's zijn het moordenaars en criminelen. Voor de meeste Palestijnen zijn het helden en vrijheidsstrijders. De makers van HotHouse kregen exclusieve toegang tot de best bewaakte Palestijnse gevangenen in Israël en konden zo het verhaal vertellen van onder anderen Hasan Yusuf, een Hamasleider op de West Bank die onlangs in zijn cel verkozen werd tot parlementslid; Abu Naji, een Fatahleider in de cel, die al ruim 24 jaar in gevangenschap verkeert; Ahlam Tamimni, Hamasleidster van de vrouwelijke gevangenen, veroordeeld tot zestien maal levenslang voor het beramen en uitvoeren van de aanval op het Sbarrorestaurant in Jeruzalem. De gevangeniservaring in een Israëlische cel is uitgegroeid tot een nationaal Palestijns symbool, en de gevangenissen voor Veiligheidsgevangenen zijn in feite opleidingsinstituten voor het Palestijnse nationalisme, waar niet alleen de ideeën van de gevangenen gevormd worden, maar waar tevens een noodzakelijke fase plaatsvindt op weg naar het Palestijnse leiderschap. In HotHouse kon zo de ontwikkeling worden bestudeerd van de gemeenschap van Palestijnse gevangenen naar een democratische maatschappij en de impact van een dergelijke evolutie op de Palestijnse politiek buiten de gevangenis. Die impact culmineerde in de historische verkiezingen voor het Palestijnse parlement op 20 januari 2006, die de militante Islamitische Hamas-beweging aan de macht brachten. Zoals het geval was op Robbeneiland in Zuid-Afrika, beleeft momenteel het leiderschap van de toekomstige Palestijnse staat zijn incubatieperiode in Israëlische gevangenissen.

A penetrating look at Palestinian men and women in Israeli prisons.

Around eight thousand Palestinians are imprisoned in Israeli jails today. They are called 'Security Prisoners.' To most Israelis they are assassins and criminals. To most Palestinians they are heroes and freedom fighters.With unique access to the most guarded Palestinian prisoners in Israel, HotHouse tells, among others, the stories of Hasan Yusuf, a Hamas leader in the West Bank, who was recently elected to parliament from his prison cell; Abu Naji, Fatah leader in prison for more than 24 years; Ahlam Tamimni, Hamas leader of the female prisoners, sentenced to 16 life terms for planning and executing the attack on the Sbarro restaurant in Jerusalem. The prison experience in an Israeli jail has become a Palestinian national symbol and the prisons for Security Prisoners are in fact academies for Palestinian nationalism, not only shaping the prisoners' ideas, but also providing a necessary phase on the path to Palestinian leadership. HotHouse could thus explore the evolution of the society of Palestinian prisoners into a democratic community and the impact of such an evolution on Palestinian politics outside prison. This impact culminates with the historic elections to the Palestinian Parliament on January 20, 2006, which brought the militant Islamic organization Hamas to power. As was the case on Robben Island, South Africa, the leadership of the future Palestinian state is being incubated in Israeli jails today.
