Sinossi

Synopsis
The "long night" featured in the title of Syrian director Hatem Ali's latest film is the metaphor for the long period of political imprisonment imposed on numerous Syrian citizens and of how for some it is finally coming to an end. We are in the nineties and, following the repeated appeals coming from the western world, the government seems to have slightly loosened its grip on political dissidents, as announced by the medias outside. For years, those who have had the courage to oppose the authorities and have consequently been labelled as "unfaithful" have spent their life within the confined common spaces of their cells. Here they have discussed, from time to time and in a hushed tone, about the cultural and political situation of their country. The group's elder, Karim/ "Abu Nidal", a well-respected example of courage and political integrity, lies apathetically his face to the wall, unmoved by the news of his imminent release, even though he is no longer forced to sign a declaration pre-filled by the authorities or comply with some compromise. Karim and two other inmates are summoned to get ready for their release. We watch them, as they wash, groom and dress, regain their dignity as men - maybe intellectuals- and prepare for their return home, better still, to what is left of their homes and possessions, after the passage of their disillusioned relatives. Their return becomes the metaphor for a change, which till then had been unthinkable. A final glance goes to the damp walls, the beds crammed into a few squared metres, the leaking tap, before bidding goodbye with a last hug to the young and feistier friend who has been denied his freedom. Then the streets. Followed by a sense of bewilderment for the newfound society of men, the variety of goods on sale in the streets, all the normal aspects of life they have been deprived of for years. And last, maybe, the reunion with their families, who in the mean time have had to survive in their absence, who have had to pay for their patriarch's political ardour with ostracism, degradation and exile.
