"The difficulty with Unsere Afrikareise was that on the one hand I wanted to control it as much as the Rainer film (i.e., not lose one possibility of a frame/sound event) and on the other I wanted it to be very "real", to respect the reality of what I had filmed. The sound and image had to have a relationship in every split second.
And so in this film I never interpretated or created in one direction. The film comes on, it is compact, and all the emotions are possible at the same time: while the soundtrack makes you laugh, the image, the image would make you cry."
Peter Kubelka, in "Peter Kubelka: Working For The Next 1000 Years" interview avec Mike Wallington, Tony Rayns et John Du Cane, Cinema, n°9, Cinema Rising Ltd., 1971, London.
