Humbertona
Guitarist
Principal country concerned : Column : Music

Humbertona, Djunga d'Biluca's cousin and fellow activist in the national struggle from the town of Tchan d'Mnilin on Santo Antâo Island, divided his time between music and economics studies as he developed his art.
Following Independence in 1975, Humbertona put down his instruments in order to take up the role of ambassador to the Benelux countries, and later the United Nations. He began recording for Morabeza in 1969, before going to on to release a total of seven albums, finishing with the emblematic "Dispidida","Goodbye" sung in Cape Verde Crioulo?
Considered the finest artist of his era, he is a role model for several generations of guitarists from the archipelago. His minimalist style takes him to the roots of Morna, Cape Verde's primary musical expression.
With this release, Humbertona frames a poignant and colourful sketch of the state of being estranged from one's native land, a condition called Sodade. In tones that are simultaneously moving and soothing, we find the same artful lyricism and bottomless well of inspiration that carried Cesaria Evora to world fame.
