Mariët Bakker was born in the Netherlands and is the founding director of "Africa in the Picture", Europe's oldest African film festival. In 1995, Mariët Bakker published the first book on African Cinema: Africa in the Picture, notes on African cinema. In 2005 Mariët Bakker gave up the festival to work as a freelance film and media education advisor. She lectures on African cinema at various schools and institutes around the world. Besides, she is an advisor and member of various film committees and foundations.
Mariët Bakker was a jury member of several festivals worldwide.
