Gambian Academic and filmmaker (1947-2025).
Mbye CHAM (Mbye Baboucar CHAM) is an academic and film producer.
Professor Cham received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research interests include oral traditions; modern African literature in English and French (West Africa and South Africa); African and Third World cinema and film; and African development. He is the former director and founder of the Center for African Studies (CFAS, Howard University, Washington DC).
Born in 1947 in Bathurst (former name of Banjul), Gambia, in 1947, he died on August 29, 2025, in the United States, at 78.
Mbye Cham was a Professor of Literature and Film in the Department of African Studies at Howard University, Washington, D.C.
In addition to numerous essays and chapters in books on African and Caribbean literature and film, he is the editor of "EX-ILES: Essays on Caribbean Cinema", and co-editor of "Blackframes: Critical Perspectives on Black Independent Cinema and African Experiences of Cinema". He regularly presents African and Caribbean films to American audiences, and has just returned from judging the entries to the 2003 Zanzibar International Film Festival.
In 2010, he was the Film coordinator (with Thierno Dia), at FESMAN (Festival Mondial des Arts Nègres de Dakar - 3rd World Black Arts Festival), in Senegal.
