We remember Broken Leg (FID2011) and Black Diamond (2014), Samir Ramdani played virtuosoly with codes and sneaked into the urban spaces of the West Coast of America with great ease. Here again, his talent as a choreographer was deployed, but in sets that were more difficult to enchant. Indeed, it was in the context of a workshop at the Charles Péguy College in Paris that this film was born and whose making continued over several sequences spread over a long period of time. A fantasy film whose references are easy to detect (The Village of the Damned, of course, but also Invasion Los Angeles, The Matrix, Romero, the Cronenberg of the beginnings,...), La Cellule claims the modesty of its production economy: continuous voice-over in place of dialogue, rudimentary and repeated special effects, a whole cast of minots and amateurs, Samir Ramdani himself as (excellent) protagonist. Nevertheless, in the manner of B. series cinema, the film is full of an energy that contaminates as much as the virus, a fleeting echo of recent current events, to which the story gives way. Extreme precision in the direction of its actors, incredible professional seriousness, filmed shots, constant inventions, the film takes us at high speed from one surprise to another. Never to let go, in passing, of the political affair that the colourful youth that populates the screen embodies, claims and produces. La Cellule here holds no one prisoner, it proliferates, spreads, damn efficient, joyful and very cheerful. (J.-P.R.)
