A beautifully shot and quietly devastating look at how more than twenty years of civil war in Uganda have shaped the lives of its people, in particular its children.

Every evening a young girl walks six miles from her village to sleep in a shelter in a nearby town. Called Noah's Ark, the makeshift hostel is one of many that attempts to prevent children from being abducted by rebels and forced to fight. One child who was abducted is remembered by her mother, who became an activist after her daughter was snatched from school along with more than one hundred of her classmates. There is sorrow here, and despair, not least at the apparent complicity of the government, who seem to be doing little to end the conflict. But there is also the determination to survive, to keep on living whatever the circumstances. A meditative, almost poetic approach to a heartbreaking subject. JL
