The Airtel Trace Music Star seems to be attracting more voters following an announcement that customers stand a chance to win various prizes, including a state of the art Samsung Galaxy phone, e-value mobile money and branded merchandise.

A press release from Airtel Malawi indicates that the Airtel Trace Music Star whose grand finale is scheduled for February 21 in Blantyre where five finalists will battle it out has so far excited over 2,000 voters.

"As of Monday 16th February 2015, a total of 2063 votes were registered with 735 unique voters which is impressive," says Airtel Malawi in the statement.

Airtel Malawi has called upon people to vote for their favourite finalists by sending their name and code to 59911 with each SMS costing K50 ahead of the finale which will see the winner walking away with K14 million.

Over 30, 000 people auditioned for the show but only five made it to the final and they are Lilongwe based Mafilika Band member Sam Mjura Mkandawire, another Lilongwe resident Tiyamike Chakhaza and Big Brother Hotshots representative Siphelire Chitambo aka Sipe with Grey Longwe and Vitumbiko Phiri from Blantyre.

Last week Sipe indicated that she had pulled out of the race due to personal reasons but Airtel Malawi Brands and Communications Manager Isabel Kachinjika said all the five finalists were in the race.

Kachinjika said the list was intact as Sipe had not communicated to them officially. Adverts have since been flying around with all the five finalists intact calling upon people to vote for their favourite.

Apart from walking away with K14 million cash prize, the winner is also expected to take part in the Pan African Airtel Trace Music Star with other contestants drawn from 13 countries to battle it out for the accolade of the next 'Big African Star.'

The winner of the Pan African showcase will win $50,000, a record deal and a week-long musical mentoring session with renowned artist and producer Akon in New York, USA.

"We look forward to a Malawian making it far and do well during the Pan African showcase," said Kachinjika last week.

Meanwhile, Airtel Malawi says it will convene a press conference in Blantyre tomorrow ahead of the grand finale on February 21.
