The information and communication technologies have improved a lot the way we create, manage, publish and spread knowledge.

Aware of the imporatnce of these technologies abd their impact on the production and spreading of information, the CODESRIA (Council for the Development of Research in Social Sciences) is organising from september 1st to 2nd 2004 in Dakar, Senegal, a conference on the impact of the informatrion and communication technologies and electronic dissemination.

GOALS
The main goal of the conference is to be conducive to :
- an experience sharing between participants in the field of computerisation and electronic dissemination of scientific documents (reviews, theses and memoires among other things).
- A reflection and a better acknowledgement of the challenges and stakes that entail the information and communication technologies
- A better use of computer science tools in documentary bodies, publishing bodies and in the field od research.

The specific goals will deal with :

- the catalogues on line
- the numeric collections
- electronic publication of documentary products
- computerization of scientifc docuùents
- electronic dissemination of scientifc documents.


PARTICIPANTS

Will attend this conference :
- professionals in the field of information and communication (archivers, librarians, documentalists, among others)
- Information technologies professionals
- Electronic publication professionals
- Researchers, experts, publishers, disseminaters, consultans and all those work in the field of electronic publication or who hae a particular interest on information and communication technologies.


ORGANISING THE CONFERENCE
The workshop is organised through sessions during which will be presented communications dealing with differentb topics. Case-studies will also be presented.

WORKING LANGUAGES
The working languages will be English and French,

- Putting databases on line
- Electronic publication of reviews
- Elctronic submission of theses and memoires
- Nemeric libraries
- Archiving and preserving numeric collections
- Electronic publication of rayalties
- Electronic publication and normalization
- Numeric gap
- The role of the information professionals at the time of computer science
- Sharing electronic resources


EXPECTED RESULTS
At the end of the conference, particiapants will have given their contribution to the scientific reflection on the stakes of information and communication technologies for documentation centres, libraries, archives services, publishing bodies among others.
The conference will have been the framework for fruitful exchanges of ideas and experiences between participants. One of its adventages will be to encourage the creation of a network of documentary bodies in the field of social sciences.

After the conference papers will be published in the shape of a team journal or book.

SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS AND PAPERS
People who are interested in this conference can submit an abstract or their paper on may 30th 2004 to CODESRIA, the latest. The authors whose abstracts have been chosen will be informed on june 15th 2004, the earliest. They will have to submit their comunications on july 31st 2004, the latest.
