An international ballet company is scheduled to perform at Celebration Centre this coming Tuesday at 7 pm. Still feeling the residual pleasure of the glut of entertainment offered by the Harare International Festival of the Arts which ended last weekend, lovers of classic Western culture are in for another treat.
The China Liaoning Ballet troupe will be giving the rare treat courtesy of the Chinese embassy in the country as part of a series of cultural activities lined up to celebrate 35 years of diplomatic relations between China and Zimbabwe.
Embassy cultural and educational attaché Dr Wu Chuanhua said that the troupe is one of the best in China and they are confident that attendees will experience the same exquisite delight that they have come to expect from all Chinese performing artists.
"We are delighted to observe 35 years of friendship between our two nations and by getting to know more about each other's culture we are sure that the relationship will grow," said Dr Wu in an interview.
Liaoning ballet of China founded in 1980, is China's only a northern ballet. The Liaoning ballet dance school was founded in 1994, with nearly six hundred students and has become an important domestic and international training base.
The school adheres world classical ballet principles while at the same time incorporating Chinese characteristics. They have successfully performed classics such as "Swan Lake" "Le Corsaire" "Don Quixote" "The Nutcracker" "Cinderella" "Giselle" "Sleeping Beauty""Raymonda" Napoli" "Raymonda" "Lasylphide" "Spartacus" and other works.
They are also adepts at Chinese ballet tales such as "Moonlight over the Erquan Pond" for which they have won the sixth Drama Festival Award, the Central Propaganda Department "Five" project award and the 2005-2006 annual national best stage art project "Ten Excellent" drama awards.
