Founded by Tendai Guzha who is the first Zimbabwean dancer to be certified by the South African Dance Teachers' Association (SADTA), Dance 1st International hosted a workshop at National Ballet in Avondale, Harare, on Saturday, while another SADTA-certified dancer Fungai Tichana held his own workshop on Friday.

The workshop was in partnership with International Dance Organisation (IDO), which currently has two representatives in the country.

The workshops were aimed at teaching dance to attendants focusing on R 'n' B, Hip Hop and house dances with the help of South African national Craig Bullock, director of SADTA Stage branch, who was also in the country with IDO executive secretary, Kirsten Dan Jensen.

IDO is the international board of dance that is recognised by the Olympic committee since dance is also viewed as a sport.

Speaking before the workshop on Friday, Guzha said the workshops taught dancing basics.

"At the workshops, we will be teaching dancers the foundation of different dance styles, the basics and the moves because most people street dance is something that comes out of the blue like there is no train of thought," Guzha said.

"South Africa has won the IDO final competitions that are viewed as the world cup of dance. They started off with workshops like these and have since natured a dance industry in their country."

Bullock said: "Everyone who has an interest to dance is invited to come and this is history in the making as this is the first step of development and we will be coming back."

Jensen said plans were underway to introduce Zimbabwe and its dancers to the IDO so that they could start building structures in the country.

"This will enable them to participate in competitions in Africa and internationally," Jensen said.

"It has been the wish of IDO to grow in Africa but the visa problems have been a draw back so we have decided to grow within Africa first."

Tichana said he was confident that the dance industry would rapidly grow in the next year, saying that they wouldbe actively involved with the IDO.

He said there were possibilities of holding national dance competitions in the country next year.
