Organisers of the Lake of Stars Festival (LoS) will hold a film festival in May in a bid to bring the festival closer to people.
The organisers of the annual event have lined up a number of activities, key among them a film festival dubbed Lilongwe Shorts, which is scheduled to take place in the Capital.
"Just like we have done in the past three years beginning with the City of Stars festival in 2013, we have lined up a number of activities in the run-up to the LoS 2015. For the first time, Mzuzu will in April hold Sunset Sessions, an arts event taking place late afternoon to somewhere in the evening.
"Lilongwe will host a frist-ever film festival in May and in June, the city will also host a children's festival. In Blantyre, we are organising a train party in August where people will enjoy a ride from the commercial capital to Liwonde National Park," LoS founder Will Jameson told The Nation.
According project manager for the film festival Patrick Garety, the festival will run for two days at a venue to be announced.
"We are strongly considering two possibilities but as we're yet to finalise this, we're not yet in a position to announce. The venue will be in Lilongwe, and easily accessible," he explained.
He added: "A full programme will be released next month, but most likely we will be screening about 50 different short films. The emphasis will be on Malawian films, but this is an international film festival. One of the aims is to connect Malawian filmmakers to other professionals around the world and to connect filmmakers from the region. We would like to showcase Malawian talent and also to attract international talent to Malawi.
"As such, we will be screening films from around the world with a special emphasis on African cinema. We would like to forge strong relationships with film festivals in the region such as the Zanzibar International Film Festival, the Durban International Film Festival and the Salaam Kivu International Film Festival (DRC).
