The African Caribbean Institute of Jamaica, ACIJ, was established in 1972 with the mission to deepen public awareness of the contribution of African cultural retention to the Jamaican social ethos. As the division with the designated responsibility for cultural research within the Institute of Jamaica, the ACIJ has developed a systematic research and documentation programme, thereby establishing its importance as a centre for the study of the African presence in Jamaican and Caribbean culture.
