The Indian Cultural Centre, Georgetown, set up in 1972, was one of the first cultural centres set up by the ICCR abroad. Since a majority of the people of Guyana are of Indian origin, being the descendants of indentured labour who arrived in Guyana in the 19th century, they are very keen to keep alive their cultural traditions and customs. The Indian Cultural Centre, therefore, plays a pivotal role and enables the Indo-Guyanese and the wider Guyanese community to appreciate the true nature of Indian culture.
The Centre holds classes in Kathak dance, Tabla, vocal music, harmonium and in Yoga. It also has a well-stocked library where, apart from books and journals, the latest Indian and local newspapers and magazines are also available.
Major cultural pageants are held on occasions such as the ITEC Day, the Indian Arrival Day, as also on national days and important festivals such as the Phagwah. These programmes organised by the Centre are able to bring together the participation of many socio-cultural organisations onto a single platform.
