Abady Egata-Patché is a Reunionese entrepreneur, descendant of Indian employees. He tells the story of his ancestors who came to Reunion Island in the 19th century, most of them with a work contract, to replace the slaves freed after the abolition of 1848. Abady is angry at their living and working conditions, at the deception of the administration. He even filed a complaint against the French state for "crime against humanity". Can engagementism be considered a form of slavery? The debate has been launched. Several historians (including Frédéric Régent, Michèle Marimoutou-Oberlé and Sully Govindin) explain what engagementism is, the differences or similarities with slavery or slavery-like practices, providing their analysis of a still little-known period of colonialism.
