Rallia is nineteen years old and decides to return to her country of origin, Algeria, to be reunited with her family and especially her mother who abandoned her twenty years earlier. She arrives in the desert expanses where she moves around as if she had never left. She draws the eyes on her, a young girl with very short hair, in this country where women hide under a veil. She meets her grandfather and her aunt, Nedjma, who is considered crazy. With her, Rallia goes to meet Keltoum, her mother, who works in the city. She adopts the people's way of life and, before seeing her mother, discovers the poverty, misery, violence and intolerance of her country today. She adopts the way of life of the people there.
