The film SAND & FIRE (The impossible Dream!) tells the extraordinary story of DOMINGO BADIA, alias ALI BEY EL ABBASSI (born, 1767 Barcelona - died, 1818 Damascus) and that of LADY HESTER STANHOPE, otherwise known as MELEKI, QUEEN OF PALMYRA, (born, 1776 Kent, England - died, 1839 Djîhoun, Syria). Set between 1802 and 1818, the plot of the film has resonance for today with searing realism as it depicts a moderate peaceful Islam confronting another which is fanatical and cruel. It is a true story about a Spanish army officer, Domingo Badia, who is sent to Morocco as an explorer by Prime Minister GODOY with a false identity of one, Ali Bey, son of the Emir of Damascus (assassinated by the Turks). He is, in fact, a secret agent with a mission to overthrow the Moroccan Sultan, Moulay Slimane, who trades wheat with the English for munitions destined to destabilize Andalusian Spain. Within this time period, a certain Richard Brothers (well known for his extremely detailed prediction of the beheading of King Louis XVI) revealed in a book that Lady Hester Stanhope, niece of the English Prime Minister, William Pitt, would be crowned Queen of Palmyra, the new Zenobia. Domingo Badia meets Lady Hester when he goes to London on a mission. It is the starting point of a passionate tumultuous love affair which endures for fourteen years before its tragic end; their love unable to sustain two irreconcilable visions of Islam. SAND & FIRE (The impossible Dream!) is an adventure film of fearless heroes and their thrilling exploits in keeping with the epic tradition. A film-goer, travelling with Ali Bey through Spain, France, England and Morocco, is transported to sumptuously decorated palaces in Madrid, Paris, London and Morocco of the early 19th century and with Lady Hester to the burning sands of Arabia and the ancient ruins of Palmyra.

I have always had freedom of choice concerning the topics and characters of all my previous films. For this one, I feel designated - as if it has chosen me… With his accomplished seduction, no one can resist the charms of the trickster, Badia /Ali Bey: From the most humble subjects to the grandest dignitaries, from the Sultan Moulay Slimane, to Lady Hester, Queen of Palmyra, to Napoleon himself who enquires of Talleyrand:
"Your man - is he genius or visionary?" To which Talleyrand answers.
"A subtle combination of both, Sire. Great men are made that way."
"I'll ignore that impertinence." replies Napoleon.

E' la straordinaria storia di DOMINGO BADIA conosciuto col nome di ALI BEY EL ABASSI, nato a Barcellona nel 1767 - Morto a Damasco nel 1818 e LADY HESTER STANHOPE, conosciuta col nome di MELEKI, REGINA DI PALMIRA, nata a Kent (Inghilterra) nel 1776 - Morta a Djîhoun (Siria) nel 1839.

SABBIE E FUOCO (Il sogno impossibile!), seppur ambientato tra il 1802 e 1818 è un film di straordinaria attualità che contrappone l'Islam moderato e pacifico e il fanatismo religioso più estremo e crudele. Tratto da una storia vera, il film narra le vicende di Domingo Badia, un ufficiale dell'esercito spagnolo, inviato in Marocco come "agente segreto" col nome di Ali Bey, per rovesciare il sultano Moulay Slimane, accusato di vendere grano agli inglesi in cambio di armi, che poi avrebbe rivolto contro la Spagna, e Lady Hester Stanhope, nipote del primo ministro inglese William Pitt e influente figura politica, alla quale un certo Richard Brothers - celebre per aver predetto con esatezza la decapitazione del Re di Francia, Luigi XVI, aveva annunciato che sarebbe diventata: Regina di Palmira - La nuova Zenobia.

Con l'incontro a Londra, nasce tra Ali Bey e Lady Hester una storia d'amore lunga 14 anni, che si concluderà col tragico epilogo nel quale l'amore cederà il posto a due visioni inconciliabili dell'Islam.

Ispirato a personaggi e fatti reali, SABBIE E FUOCO (Il sogno impossibile!) è un grande film d'avventura e d'azione, che si riallaccia alla tradizione delle epopee popolari, ricche di intrepidi eroi e continue peripezie. Ali Bey porta lo spettatore in un incredibile viaggio attraverso la Spagna, l'Inghilterra, la Francia passando poi dai sontuosi palazzi di Madrid, Parigi e Londra, al Marocco ed Medio Oriente, agli infuocati deserti d'Arabia, e alle rovine di Palmira. È una fantastica cavalcata, un susseguirsi di episodi avventurosi dove il coraggio, l'ambizione, l'amore e la tragedia sono i veri protagonisti. Assoluto seduttore, nessuno resiste al fascino di Domingo Badia - Ali Bey: dalle persone più semplici ai più alti dignitari, da Moulay Slimane, Sultano del Marocco,a Lady Hester Stanhope, incoronata Regina di Palmira, fino a Napoleone che chiede a Talleyrand : "È un genio o un folle il vostro protetto?" e Talleyrand che risponde: "Una delicata mescolanza dei due. Di quel particolare tipo che genera grandi uomini." Domingo Badia y Leblich, alias Ali Bey mi ha cercato. E alla fine mi ha trovato! Fino a voler investire tutta la mia attenzione e la mia energia al servizio del film SABBIE E FUOCO (Il sogno impossibile!). Ero solito, per i miei film precedenti, scegliere io stesso soggetti e personaggi. Questa volta invece ho la netta sensazione di essere stato scelto, designato..
