South African mining is at the center of both the glory and dishonour of South Africa's history. It is difficult to understand the future of this country and its apartheid past without digging into its mining history. Did the indigenous people of South Africa mine before 1652, when the Europeans came? What and how did they mine? If they did mine, how did they move out of mining and end up as labourers? Having won their country back, how did they negotiate a way to own a part of this industry for the benefit of the poor amongst them?
