You can't be serious when you're 17. You can't be serious when you're 20 either. And sometimes we do stupid things without realizing the consequences. In Ben's case, life took it upon itself to remind him of that lesson, and now he's sunk on a quadriplegic bed. The miracle will be a moving toe and his transfer from a hopeless hospital bed to a rehabilitation centre where he can dream of a future. Maybe not the one he envisioned with his sports studies and his basketball team, but that will have to be understood and accepted.
Patients, this is the story of Ben, who will have to reinvent his life by integrating what is now his disability. An adaptation that will be done through roundabout ways, with ups and downs, and a lot of friendship. It is also the story of Farid, Toussaint, Steve and Samia; the "other" disabled people he will meet. The story of a bunch of buddies who have been through a lot in life but who haven't forgotten that there is strength in numbers and that humour can save them. Patients, it is the story of these broken hopes and of those who are born, of those moments of inevitable depression and of those where the handicap and the difficult decor of a rehabilitation centre fade away to let laughter take its place. Patients, it's a year in a centre, stories that intersect and bonds that are created to try to forget that sometimes life takes strange paths to build destinies.
