By 2007 I had started a charity initiative Sweet Home Uganda (SHUGA).
The driving force was the desire to devote a portion of my time and resources to reach other people; especially those who where in a more disadvantaged state than my own. To this end I had learnt that I would need a team to work with but at the time I could not afford the much needed volunteer support. After consulting with some University students who made up most of my customer base I started a dance class; Sweet Sound Steps (SSS). In exchange for free dance classes I asked the members to offer some of their free time to accompany me on the street art project that SHUGA was undertaking with street kids. That same year we held our first national art exhibition highlighting the plight of street kids. 2007 launched our first national awareness art exhibition. Sponsored by the German and French embassies through Alliance Françoise and the European Union delegation.
Sweet Sound Steps is a unique therapeutic dance project that aims to use dance to uplift the emotional as well as social welfare of participants.
Engaging with the homeless children was both a challenge and an opportunity to learn while dealing with our own childhood backgrounds.
To speak metaphorically, and deal with issues we would have probably never talked about, art and dance became a therapy. Dance gives one the tools to express oneself without necessarily speaking. Sharing my own story with others as they share their own has made me realize how much we have in common regardless of our different backgrounds.
