Karen Marks Mafundikwa is a Jamaican filmmaker and the director/producer of  documentary feature film The Price of Memory (2014) which explores the legacy of slavery in Jamaica and traces the movement for slavery reparations there. A decade in the making, it follows legal actions by a group of Rastafari against Queen Elizabeth II. Previously, she produced and wrote documentary feature film Shungu: The Resilience of a People (2009), which follows the lives of ordinary people in Zimbabwe for two years during economic crisis and political stalemate. The film has screened on three continents including premieres at IDFA (Amsterdam) and BFI London Film Festival; winner of the Ousmane Sembene Award at Zanzibar Film Festival 2010 and Best Documentary Kenya International 2010. She has a BA in Journalism and Anthropology from New York University and MSc in International Development from Tulane University School of Law. She learned filmmaking through workshops and working for 3 years as full-time assistant to Emmy-winning documentary filmmaker Gene Searchinger while still in college in New York City.
