Hilary Armstrong was born in Barbados in 1959. She received her education in Barbados and England.
In 1977 she started as a batik artist with the "Barbados Batik" group and was the artist in charge from 1979 - 1981. Hilary opened her own studio in 1981.
In 1993, Hilary attended a visual arts summer course at the Edinburgh college of art. SHe also atended weekend classes in etching and printmaking at Edinburgh in 1993, 1999 and 2002.

Hilary paints in acrylic on paper and canvas and she also paints large murals and decorative finishes on furniture and walls.
