THE death of renowned actress Pretty Xaba has plunged the nation and entertainment fraternity into mourning.



Xaba famed for her role as Mai Muvengwa in the popular soap Studio 263 died on Saturday afternoon at the BLK Super Speciality Hospital in New Dehli, India where she was being treated for cancer.



She was 49 and is survived by two daughters Hope and Runyararo.



Xaba was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus in September and was flown to India in October for the surgery.



Speaking to NewsDay, fellow actress Evangelista Mwatse said she was deeply grieved with the passing on of Xaba.



"I am very honoured to have worked with her (Pretty) in several productions and having a good relationship with her off work. I will never forget what a great person and source of inspiration she was," Mwatse said.



"She will always be remembered. May the comfort from God and others in this time of sorrow support her two daughters Hope and Runyararo as well as the entire family."



South Africa based Zimbabwean actress Anne Nhira said she was gutted by the death of Xaba.



"We have lost a talented actress who had changed the showbiz sector with her skills. May her soul rest in peace," Nhira said.



Social networks were also abuzz with condolence messages from producers, artistes and actors paying reverence to the popular actress.



International Images Film Festival for Women director Yvonne Jila wrote; "Isitsha esihle asidleli . . . May your soul rest in peace my sister and friend



Pretty Xaba, you fought through to the end. May God comfort your daughters and all who loved you?"



"Go well Pretty Xaba. God had His own plans with you….we tried our best," wrote musician Edith WeUtonga Katiji.



Tendayi Chakanyuka a DJ with a local radio station wrote on Facebook; "I was so hopeful and was looking forward to welcoming her (Pretty) back early next year.



Mwari vatonga havo ndiri kurwadziwa. Pretty shamwari you were a fighter, but God wanted you in his garden too. Rest in peace Mai Hope vasikana."



Harare Province Affirmative Action Group (AAG) President Liberty Bizure said we have lost a talented person.



"People like Pretty worked tirelessly to keep us glued to our small screens. May her soul rest in peace," he said.



Taonga Mafundikwa who was the co-ordinator of the Let's Help Pretty Xaba Campaign which was put in place to fundraise for the actress cum friend said burial arrangements will be announced after family consultations.



Xaba has taken part in a number of plays and films among them Wedding Dress, Something Nice From London, and several radio dramas. She has also featured in advertisements for prominent organisations.
