Noticing the gap that exists between local and international photographers, the Photographers Association of Malawi (Photama) plans to introduce annual photo awards in the country.
In an interview with The Nation, Lucky Mkandawire, President of the association said they noticed that Malawi was the only country within the region that does not recognize the work of its photographers.

He said due to the development Malawian photographers do not have the enthusiasm to participate in numerous international photography contests because they lack exposure.
"We want to recognize Malawian photographers for their work. At the same time we are trying to make them to understand the concept of awards which we feel will encourage them to take part in global competitions," said Mkandawire.
The president said the association had learnt from other international associations like in Germany and Tanzania on how they administer their awards, which are mostly presented during annual photo exhibitions.
He added that Malawi has lately been producing respectable photographers and photojournalists including female who could compete and successfully win global contests but need support.
"Awards encourage one to do better and that will result in photographers developing interests to compete globally," he said.
Photama, which is one of the country's 10 rights holder associations that receive support from the Norwegian Embassy, used to award its photographers during its infancy stages but stopped due to lack of funds.
