US Ambassador Virginia Palmer has said that she is very passionate about arts and hence would strive to help uplift it by among others, encouraging cultural exchanges.

Palmer said this in an interview last Thursday during a meeting with Journalists in Blantyre where she shared some of the programmes the US government is running in the country.

She said arts and culture plays a very crucial role in the society.

"I am the child of a theatre professor and my father is passionate about arts particularly community theatre and so that has been passed to me. I hope to explore more in the arts and help in its development," said Palmer.

She said it would be important for artists between US and Malawi to do cultural exchanges.

Palmer's predecessor Jeanine Jackson, who is an artist, was also passionate about arts.

Artists have been battling for support in the country for different projects in the absence of funding and many heavily rely on funding from donors. The past has seen the country operating without the cultural policy which was approved recently by the cabinet committee. With the cultural policy now into effect, the arts industry is now seeking the establishment of the Arts Council.

However, despite this move, the ambassador did not come out fully as to whether there was funding towards the arts and culture.

In her message recently, Palmer said Malawi and US share strong partnership based on mutual respect that she will advance through programmes in health, education and electrification
