In Benin, "Egungun" are sacred masks from Yoruba. Originating from the neighbouring Nigeria, these masks are said to have been introduced in Benin about the middle of the nineteenth century. By definition, an Egungun is the skeleton of a dead parent, this is why it can be adored, loved, respected, but also feared a lot. Exclusively Yoruba at first, it has now won all of Southern Benin.
