With his Jamaican wife Antoinette and their children, German director Lars Barthel divides his life between Kingston and Berlin. But a shadow has crept into this seemingly idyllic picture: Lars doesn't understand his wife's obsession with hairstyles. Antoinette changes her hairstyle every month by getting hairpieces, an addiction shared by many women on the Caribbean island. She can't stand her natural hair, short and curly, "hostile like a jungle". It was while accompanying her husband to Burma, where he was giving film classes, that she discovered that young girls were selling their hair to help their families.
Shorn and shaved
Throughout this funny but far from futile family chronicle, Lars Barthel tries to get to the bottom of the psyche of Antoinette and her Jamaican friends. What does this permanent dissatisfaction with their deep relationship to their identity say about them, as descendants of African slaves? By pulling the thread... of these wigs, the director, who much prefers his wife's natural hair, discovers a real business of second-hand hair, sometimes made in factories in India, Korea or China...
