To be a moffie is to be weak, effeminate, illegal. In 1981, in South Africa, like all white boys over the age of 16, Nicholas Van der Swart had to complete two years of compulsory military service to defend the Apartheid regime. In addition to communism and the "die swart gevaar" (the so-called "black danger"), Nicholas has to face the brutality of the army as a relationship develops between him and another recruit.
