Sogo Sanon, nicknamed "Tasuma", the fighter, is a former colonial soldier who fought alongside the French army in Indochina and Algeria. After waiting years, Tasuma now has high hopes of being paid his retirement pension. He travels to Bobo to receive his due, and on the way meets his friend Khalil, a prominent Lebanese trader. Sure of getting his pension and impatient to be of service to the village's women, he buys a motorised mill from Khalil on credit. On his return, Tasuma receives a hero's welcome. However, the promised pension does not arrive despite Tasuma's strenuous efforts to get it.
