After a few racist comments from his family, Abou goes to school with apprehension.

With Alexandre Moulo, Claudia Tagbo and Suivis for four years, a group of schoolchildren from Seine-Saint-Denis work together to make a film. A moving choral portrait by Éric Baudelaire, winner of the Prix Marcel-Duchamp 2019.

Making a film together. Yes, but which one? "A film about our lives", suggests one. "Our college diary", suggests a second, while another assures: "A film is made to transport us." From their entry into the sixth form to the third form, the twenty or so pupils of the cinema group at the Dora-Maar college in Saint-Denis have been the author-actors of Un film dramatique. Commenting as a group on the news carried by current events - the attacks of 2015, the campaign for the 2017 presidential election - or putting words (and thoughts) on the question of nationality, the clichés around the suburbs or their daily life, Lena, Gaëtan, Alyssa, Fatimata, Guy-Yanis and the others show a little of their close environment, from the Pleyel crossroads to the intimacy of their homes, or further afield, as far as Romania. In front of the camera, then behind it, they all share their thoughts and feelings.

Slice of life
Winner of the 2019 Marcel-Duchamp Prize with this documentary, the heart of an artistic project entitled "Tu peux prendre le temps", and presented in October 2019 at the Centre Pompidou, the artist-filmmaker Éric Baudelaire, winner of the Audi Talents Prize in 2012, juxtaposes the language of reporting and interviewing with that of commentary, essay and scripted fiction when fictional characters come to intrude on reality. Accompanied over four years in the construction of a narrative, these teenagers from different backgrounds and origins give a sincere and accurate account of their experiences over the course of the seasons and landscapes. In a moving choral portrait, they testify to their unique way of living a common present.
