Johanin Bangdor was born 1961 on Ambrym island, Vanuatu
Sculpture on wood, fern and stone.

His work takes inspiration from the legends and stories of Ambrym island. Among these legends, the ones gathered by the ethnologist Gayer Fisha gave birth to many of his sculptures.

Even though his attachment to his island is very strong, Bangdor's work has taken a lot of freedom from the traditional custom practices of his fellow sculptors. It has therefore given new life to the legends of Ambrym and allowed the island's history to become visually alive on wood.
Invited by Alliance française to exhibit his work in 2005, he now lives from his art work and takes part to many Vanuatu art exhibitions.
His work has also opened a new interest for all traditional objects from Ambrym.
