Dr. Sylvia Antonia Nannyonga-Tamusuza is an Associate Professor of Music, Coordinator, Ethnomusicology in Uganda Projects and Curator, Makerere University Klaus Wachsmann Music Archive. Dr. Nannyonga-Tamusuza is a graduate of Makerere University where she received a Bachelor of Arts with Education (economics and music, dance, and drama, specializing in music) and Master of Arts in Music degrees. She holds a PhD (Ethnomusicology) from the University of Pittsburgh, USA. Nannyonga-Tamusuza established the ethnomusicology program at Makerere University both at undergraduate and Graduate levels. She is the founder the newly founded Klaus Wachsmann Music Archive at Makerere University.
Nannyonga-Tamusuza has been honored with numerous fellowships, awards, scholarships and grants including, but not limited to: African Guest Researcher Scholarship Images of and in Africa Program: The Nordic Africa Institute Uppsala, Sweden; NORAD Program in Arts and Cultural Education Grant Bergen, Norway; Norwegian Program for Cooperation in Research and Education (NUFU) Grant Bergen, Norway; Guest Researcher in Ethnomusicology Fellowship Griegakademiet, Institutt for Musik, University of Bergen, Norway Visiting Professor in Music Griegakademiet, Institutt for Musik, University of Bergen, Norway; Teaching Fellowship, University of Pittsburgh, USA; Honor for Significant and Positive Impact on students´ Lives, University of Pittsburgh, USA; Outstanding Student (24th Annual Honor's Convocation), University of Pittsburgh, USA; Andrew Melon Pre-doctoral fellowship, University of Pittsburgh, USA; Pantaleoni Prize for the best Graduate paper presented at MACSEM Conference (Mid Atlantic Chapter for the Society for Ethnomusicology; and the Andrew Melon PhD Scholarship, University of Pittsburgh, USA.
She has presented more than seventy papers and lectures both in Uganda and in the United States and Europe. She was the Keynote Speaker at the Thirtieth Anniversary for the Finish Society of Ethnomusicology, Helsinki, Finland. As a performer of a number of Ugandan musical and dance styles, Dr. Nannyonga-Tamusuza has performed and organized workshops on music based on Ugandan indigenous musical and dance styles in Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Ireland, United States, Canada, Italy, Britain, and Austria. Nannyonga-Tamusuza is currently an artist in Residence with the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts for 2008-2011 and her project is: "Building Communities through Ugandan Folklore."
She has published more than fifteen papers on popular music, church music, school music competitions, sexuality in music and dance, politics, gender and music. Nannyonga-Tamusuza's publications include a full-length book titled: Baakisimba: Gender in Music and Dance of the Baganda People of Uganda, 2005 published by Routledge. Her present research is on conceptualization of "African" music in Bergen (Norway) and Uppsala (Sweden) and Music and Vatican II Council Reform: A Liturgical Crisis in the Roman Catholic Church in Uganda.
Currently Dr. Sylvia is the head/Chair of the School of Performing Arts and Film at Makerere Univeristy.
