Founded in 2016, WE ARE NOT THE MACHINE is an independent Kenyan production company that tells stories of outsiders, rebels and change-makers.

WE ARE NOT THE MACHINE provides creative production, fundraising and service production support and we regularly collaborate on shorts, feature documentaries and series with content creators from across the world.

WHAT WE DO

* FEATURE PRODUCTION
We collaborate with both new and experienced filmmakers interested in working in East Africa to produce or co-produce their feature projects.

* SERIES PRODUCTION
We partner with co-producers and broadcasters to develop and produce series for global audiences.

* SERVICE PRODUCTION
We provide fixing services and production support for production companies, broadcasters, and brands looking to produce content in East Africa.

KENYA'S LEADING FACTUAL FILMMAKERS

Toni KAMAU (Creative Producer)
Toni Kamau is a factual creative producer with over ten years experience. Her past credits include factual series producing as well as directing and producing half hour TV documentaries for Al Jazeera, BBC World, MTV Europe and CCTV Africa.
Toni currently serves as a producer and co-producer on three feature documentaries filmed in Kenya, which have in total received support from Sundance, Doc Society, Hot Docs Blue Ice Fund, IDFA Bertha Fund, Just Films, DocuBox East Africa and Oak Foundation.
Deeply committed to improving Kenya's emerging film industry, she has served as Vice Chair of the Kenya Film and TV Professional Association and is currently a member of Kenya's Official Oscar Selection Committee.

Pete MURIMI (Director)
Pete Murimi is a multiple award winning director/D.O.P who is keen on exploring gender focused stories in Africa. He recently won the Rory Peck award in 2019 for his work on the BBC Short on suicide in Kenya. After being the first East African documentary to win CNN Africa journalist of the year award in 2004 for his documentary on FGM, Pete built a career telling human rights stories for IRIN, The UN, OCHA as well as half hour broadcast stories for Channel 4, Comic relief and Al Jazeera.

Pete currently works as an investigate producer with BBC Africa Eye, out of the London office, and has released his first feature documentary, "I am Samuel" (2020), which is supported by Docubox East Africa, Sundance, Arcus Foundation, GoodPitch Kenya, Hotdocs Blue Ice, IDFA Bertha, STEPS, Heinrich Boll and Oak Foundation.
