Founded in 2008, the BFVA promotes and supports the growth of professionals and businesses in the film and video industry in Barbados.
The formation of an association was inspired by a Barbados National Cultural Foundation seminar in late 2007 and instigated in early 2008 by a committed group of professional filmmakers. Its policies and practices were formulated over a series of Steering Committee meetings, and presented for ratification at the first General meeting in February 2008.
The Association was officially launched in July 2008 with a panel and film presentation. The evening featured invited representatives from Invest Barbados, the National Cultural Foundation, the Caribbean Export Agency, the Enterprise Growth Fund and the EBCCI. Their presentations delivered information on the programmes and funding that these agencies offered that would be of interest to the members and was followed by a lively discussion. Senator Irene Sandiford-Garner represented the Ministry of Culture, which offered its support and encouragement for the new organization.
