How likely is for an asteroid to hit the Earth, for a super volcano to explode, or for us to come across an alien?

 

These are improbable - unlikely - events capable of transcending our control, but that could actually happen jeopardizing the entire existence of mankind, also because of its own actions. The exhibition unlikely is an invitation to become aware of the possible occurrence of these circumstances. The aim is to make the visitor conscious of the critical issues pertaining to our contemporaneity and our future, through the perception of artists.

 

The exhibition, curated by the students of the School for Curatorial Studies Venice, involves over twenty contemporary artists, who have been asked to decline and translate these topics, through mostly unpublished works.

 

The theoretical structure of the exhibition has its references in Timothy Morton's illuminating volume - Hyperobjects. As the philosopher states, the objects in the mirror are closer than they appear.[1] A sentence that summarizes the intrinsic human attitude to keep at bay everything that might be a disturbance, neglecting its actual presence.

 

Structured around the idea of risk, the exhibition builds a kaleidoscopic narrative, open to different hypotheses and interpretations that do not want to impose totalizing solutions or introduce mere catastrophic scenarios.

 

The works of the artists will be contextualized by a display deriving from an iconographic research, which comprehends archive material and scientific documentation. Books, newspaper articles, magazines, correspondence, postcards and vinyl will contribute to the creation of a visual archive that will be included in the exhibition.

 

Artists participating in the exhibition: Emanuele Wiltsch Barberio, Alvise Bittente, Giorgia Agnese Cereda, Giuseppe De Mattia, Jingee Dong, Bruno Fantelli, Alice Faloretti, Enej Gala, Silvia Giordani, Agnese Guido, Yumi Karasumaru, Giulio Malinverni, Silvia Mariotti, Anna Marzuttini, Anastasiya Parvanova, Federico Polloni, Roy Claire Potter, Oscar Contreras Rojas, Fabio Roncato, Mattia Sinigaglia, Superstudio, Alex Urso, Sophie Westerlind, Francesco Zanatta.

 

 

The exhibition takes place at the prestigious Palazzo Malipiero, one of the most renowned Byzantine buildings on the Grand Canal.

 

 

Appendix to the exhibition:

Over the centuries many artists have faced these topics, as it is suggested by the multitude of works preserved in the most important Venetian museums. Therefore, a deep research has been carried out on the works of great masters in order to broaden the narrative, creating a path that the visitor can follow helped by a map.
