Nine workers from Helwan, a working-class neighborhood In Cairo, are participating in an acting workshop. During the rehearsals, stories emerge about factory injustice and countless tales of corruption by their employers. On a rooftop overlooking Cairo, the participants move in and out of character as they shape the performance that engage their daily realities. Mixing scenes from the workshop, fiction performances and mobile phone footage filmed by a worker, this hybrid approach aims to engage a collective imaginary, situating the participants and spectators within a broader social struggle.

NOTE OF INTENTION
Out/In the Streets will feature workers of the shutdown Glucose and Starch Factory in Turah (Cairo) who stage a performance inspired by their struggles and stories. The film interlaces documentary and fiction to approach the revolutionary Egypt from the workers' perspective, beyond the factory's heavy gate, beyond the frozen assembly lines and rusty machines. In this film we explore the stories of workers who struggle to be heard as the new regime continues exploiting them much as the previous one did. This is not a classic documentary film. It assembles elements of "cinema vérité" with theatrical representations of the same stories. We tip from reality into theatre where the actors/workers become the protagonists of their own narratives. The boundaries between documentary and fiction are not clear and this manipulation serves one purpose : to reveal truth and to deliver a new insight to the audience.
