Alima's refusal to be circumcised and her running away from home has created problems in the family. Mori, the father, is furious; he holds the mother, Fanta, responsible for his daughter's unspeakable behaviour. There is no way he will deny Almami's family. There are rumours that she has fled to the city. Fanta, thus cornered, is under pressure. She decides to end her life to escape this shame. She swallows some nivaquine tablets, but is saved, in extremis, by Mariama, who comes to tell her the good news. Alima, informed by her friend Astan of her mother's suicide attempt, leaves her hiding place and goes to her mother's bedside. The different families who have daughters to be circumcised continue their preparations, as the ritual is a great ceremony during which the whole community communes together. Alima receives a letter from Bakari, her future husband, with his photos. He explains that she is the love of his life and his childhood. Bakari's brothers, informed by Sidi, threaten the school teacher who had hidden their wife.
