Mamadou Diawara was born in Mali, lived for a time in Côte d'Ivoire and emigrated to France in 1972. His wife Fanta joined him there in 1982 with their five children. Bernard Mangiante examines their progress towards integration by interviewing members of the family's three generations. The film uses the tension between two different levels of experience - the familial and the political - to attempt to understand the process whereby a sense of civil or national belonging comes into being, before this sense of belonging becomes self-evident.
