DOG SWEAT (ARAGH SAGEE) is a multiple narrative that portrays the intersecting lives of six young Iranians as they struggle to negotiate their private desires in the face of a conservative Islamic society. A young couple is desperate to be alone, a woman longs to sing but is forbidden from doing so, a gay man is forced into marriage, a feminist is having an affair with her cousin's husband, and another character's sole ambition is to have a drink with his buddies.
Shot undercover before the 2009 elections, and fuelled by the subversive urgency of cinema verité, Dog Sweat is an intimate and entertaining window into contemporary Iran.
Director Hossein Keshavarz lives between Iran and the US, and his twin perspectives inform the fi lm's sophisticated narrative. Moving beyond the overtly political issues so often associated with the country, the fi lm centres on the day-today issues of Iranian life, such as the confl ict between family expectations and individual desires. This provocative film simultaneously challenges the status quo by providing a new generation of Iranians with a fervent voice of rebellion.
