In May 1848, a ministerial circular addressed to the General Commissioners of Martinique, Guadeloupe, Reunion and Guyana, stipulated that a census should be taken and a name assigned to each person. This order from Paris inaugurated a crucial historical moment and the attribution of patronymics marked the metamorphosis of slaves into citizens.
