Witherspoon stars as Isabella El-Ibrahim, the American wife of Anwar El-Ibrahim, an Egyptian-born chemical engineer (Omar Metwally), who disappears on a flight from South Africa to Washington. Several months pregnant, Isabella tries to track her husband down while Douglas Freeman, CIA analyst (Jake Gyllenhaal) observes the interrogation and torture of her husband at a secret detention facility outside the U.S. An idealistic young man who entered the service on September 12, 2001, Douglas is forced to question the ethics of his assignment as he becomes party to the interrogation.
