Although Djibril is 28, he is, in the eyes of the Diola, still a child. He is soon to become one of the 18th generation of initiates to the Sacred Wood. Like all young people between the ages of 2 and 30 in this village in the Casamance region of Senegal, he will have to dance for whole days and nights and follow the stages of an initiation ritual culminating in the mysterious Sacred Wood. Only then will he be a Sikambano, an initiate, a man.

_______________
