After 16 years in Spain, Fatima (Fatimetu) returns home to Samara, a wilaya (district) in the Western Sahara, after her mother's funeral. Here she reunites with her brother and sister, who requires special care. Reluctantly, Fatima becomes her sister's caregiver, inspiring a family separated by different cultures to adapt and rediscover their identities. Shot in the Saharauian refugee camps of Tinduf in Algeria and cast from the local population, Tears of Sand is a marvel of authenticity and the first film ever acted by Saharauis.

a film by Pedro Pérez Rosado

2011, Spain | Hassaniya, Spanish | Arabic, English subtitles, 90 min., Color | DCP

Simple and straightforward, Pedro Pérez Rosado's WILAYA (Tears of Sand) follows the story of a young woman's homecoming. After living for 16 years in Spain, Fatimetu returns to Samara, a wilaya (the term means "district") in Western Sahara to visit her recently deceased mother's grave. There, she gets caught up in a turmoil of questions about homeland, identity and belonging.

At the heart of this poetic film are Fatimetu, her sister Hayat, their brother and his wife, as well as their neighbors and the villagers. The wilaya itself is presented with such subtlety and attention to detail that, even as it expresses the characters' inner souls, it functions as a character in its own right.

WILAYA is the first narrative feature to focus on this region, following a few documentaries -one of which was made by Rosado himself. His familiarity with the region and its people pays off; the result is a self-assured, unadorned quest. The director also shows a flair for working with non-professional actors and, while the film is entirely fictional, there are occasional elements of lovely naturalism - the butchering of a camel, for example, and the village's gazebo-like houses.

Set in a locale that is primitive and infused with a sense of emptiness, this is a film about innate intelligence and wit, as displayed by Hayat's persistent attempts to prevent Fatimetu from leaving again, and a local boy's attempts to win her heart. Will either of them succeed?

_______________
