The Menamuria String Band originates from Lumbukuti village on Tongoa Island.

It was formed in 2006 with six members, with the eldest at 18yrs old. The band then started performing at weddings, new year celebrations, parties etc.  The group gradually grew from six members in 2006 to 20 members in 2012.

"Rua Wia" was the name given to the band until 2009 when it was changed to "Menamuria " by one of the Mollucan freedom fighters,  Tommy Latuperissa. The Name Menamuria means "One we are together, Together as one or Together we are one".

The Menamuria String Band has a strong fan base consisting of supporters for the struggle for Independence of Maluku and West Papua.
