THE AWARDS OF THE SECOND EDITION OF THE LUXOR EGYPTIAN AND EUROPEAN FILM FESTIVAL

19-25 January 2014

The closing ceremony of the 2nd Luxor Egyptian and European Film Festival took place tonight, Saturday January 25th, at 5:30pm in the sumptuous temple of Karnak where the Jury announced the awards.

Katrina Diascalu and Said Shimi, members of Jury, went on stage to announce the winners, saying first how difficult it had been to choose only 2 short movies and 3 feature ones, when they all felt 10 movies deserved awards.

Please find hereafter the list of winners and the reasons of the Jury's choice:

Socrates said once that it is a lot more fun to give than take. For its poetic expression, a great feeling of rhythm, in telling a story of two little children at a train station, the SILVER DJED Pillar, the Jury's special award, goes to Sarah Rozik, for her film "The Left shoe", Egypt.

Loneliness is not always about a place, it's mostly about the way we look at the world surrounding us and daring to say I love you and express our ideas to the people we love. For his ability to beautifully express ideas in a rather daring cinematographic language, the GOLD DJED Pillar goes to Erik Schmitt for his short film "Rhino Full Throttle", Germany.

The last decade of the 20th century carried major changes in the political and social map of Europe, which also led to major questions that still remain unanswered. For its ability to describe the deep political crisis in Georgia through the story of two teenagers growing up in Tbilisi in 1992, the BRONZE DJED Pillar for the director of the best 1st film goes to Nana Ekvtimishvili for her film "In Bloom", Georgia.

Sometimes we discover our real selves in emergencies, when we are pushed to the edge. We come to conclusions concerning our life, our family, and even our political beliefs. For his ability to put together a very compact feature film, in which the fast rhythm and impeccable direction, simply managed to deliver a political, philosophical message about the new economic crisis in Europe. the SILVER DJED Pillar, the jury's special award goes to Yorgos Tsemberopoulos for his film "The Enemy Within", Greece.

The conflict between the big city and the village, modernism and authenticity, the west and the east is an eternal conflict in which we all try to find a way to realise one's identity. For its brilliant ability to express the inside human conflict of a man searching for his dream, for its great photography. The GOLD DJED Pillar goes to Milosh Puzich for his film "Withering", Serbia.
