The Chinese community in Malawi celebrated the Chinese spring festival which is also known as "the Chinese Lunar year" which is an important traditional Chinese holiday celebrated at the turn of the Chinese calendar.

The celebrations which were held on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Bingu International Conference Centre and Robins Park in Lilongwe and Blantyre were patronised by both Malawians and Chinese people living in the country.

Chinese Ambassador to Malawi Zhang Qingyang said he was delighted to have hosted this event saying it means a lot to the Chinese community all over the world, saying it brings together people to celebrate.

"The Chinese Lunar year, marks the end of winter season in China, is the longest and most important festivity in the Chinese calendar based on significant myths and traditions. It is a time to reconcile, forget all grudges, and sincerely wish peace and happiness for everyone," he said.

Qingyang further said it brought him so much joy to have seen Malawians coming in huge numbers to be part of the celebration arguing that this symbolises the good relationship between the two countries in the aspect of maintaining and improving culture.

"Even though this was a Chinese celebration, I was happy to see Malawian dancers and performances incorporated into the program this shows that we are both interested in the cultural traditions that we have. It was not only a beautiful night for the Chinese community but also the Malawian people who attended this occasion were entertained," Qingyang said.

At Robin's Park in Blantyre on Wednesday Blantyre City Mayor Noel Chamanda called on Malawians to preserve their culture and show it outside the country just as the Chinese are doing.

"The Chinese are proud of their culture and we just saw that tonight through the performances. We also need to learn from them and preserve our culture, there is a lot we can show out there so that people know what Malawi is made of," said Chalamanda.

During the event in Blantyre the Chinese Ambassador said the platform was part of showcasing their culture and said Malawi and China will continue to work together in different sectors including cultural exchanges adding that Malawian artists were welcome to perform in China.

The climax of the event was when a Chinese male artist Wang Jing performed a dub version of Black Missionaries' song 'Mulomo.' The artist attracted applause as he sang the song in a few Chichewa words stitching it with some Chinese lyrics.

This was a night which saw several performances performed by Zhejiang Wu Opera Research Centre and they included dragon dance, traditional Chinese music and acrobatics: pedaling skills.
