Born in 1960 in Conakry, Guinea, Cheick Fantamady Camara was trained in screenwriting in 1997 at the INA (National Audiovisual Institute, Paris) and in 1998 he took a course in 35mm film direction at the Louis Lumière National Film School, Paris. In 2000, he made his first short film entitled "Konorofili (Anxiety)", followed by "Békunko" ("Little John") in 2004. In 2006, he directed his first feature film Il va pleuvoir sur Conakry (Clouds over Conakry), awarded by about twenty prices all around the world. In July 2010, he starts his second feature film "Morbayassa" starring Fatoumata Diawara, Claire Simba, Alex Ogou and Tella Kpomahou.
He passed away in Paris, on Friday January 6, 2017. "My friend and colleague Cheick Fantamady Camara is now behind the big screen. He brought his nice share. His films remain immortal", said Balufu Bakupa-Kanyinda, Congolese filmmaker. Several professionals and relatives, worldwide (Germany, UK, Cameroon, Canada, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Guinea, Congo,...) expressed condolences. Funerals are scheduled on Monday January 16, 2017, at 1:15 pm, at the Père Lachaise funeral home in Paris, announced his widow, Michèle Esposto. For further details, please contact Annabel Thomas.
