Mvelani.com: Listen, share Malawian music online free

A new website has been launced to listen, share old and new Malawi music online free and is called Mvelani.com founded by London-based Dumisani Kapanga.

Kapanga told Nyasa Times that the exciting free music streaming platform is available online and mobile allowing convinience of use.

"Our goal is to be the biggest platform for Southern African music. Our entry point is Malawian music and we seek to expand to Zambian and Zimbabwean music within the year," Kapanga said.

"With our platform our users will also be able to share their music with other people. This is possible by creating an account or logging into our website using your exciting Facebook credentials.

"In the my account section of our website, a user is able to upload music. This music will be reviewed for quality purposes and once approved will be live on our mobile and web based platforms," he explained.

Kapanga said site is designing an iPhone and android app which will allow users to listen to music on the go.

"Our platforms is the first of its kind in Malawi to be able to provide a wide range of streamable music for free while allowing users to easily share their music collection with other music lovers," Kapanga told Nyasa Times.

He said Mvelani.com is  in  discussion with copyright authorities in Malawi to agree royalty fees for songs played through its platforms and obtain the appropriate copyright licences.

"We are also in a process of initiating conversations with copyright authorities in Zambia and Zimbabwe to establish the same which will allow us expand our music offering as and when those discussion are complete.

"We are excited to provide artists available on our site a diversified source of revenue for their work via the copyright authorities considering the downward trend of CD and Cassette sales in the countries we seek to operate. These artists will also be able to reach a wider market by having their music on our platform by capturing the diaspora community."

Kapanga said it is not his  first time to get involved in a tech related business, saying when he was in his first year ofUniversity of Strathclyde in Scotland (2005)  he did also create the first Malawian music download website then called malawianmp3.com.

"This website was discarded after I couldn't cope with the demand of running a popular website then and the pressure of full time study," he said.

Kapanga now work for one of the biggest investment bank in the world in London having completed his under and post graduate studies in Finance.
