“Spectacles Speculations” exhibition to open in Kumasi

An exhibition titled "Spectacles Speculations", which features artworks by fourteen artists based in Africa, Latin America and Europe will on Tuesday February 8 open at the Ablade Glover Hall, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi.
 
The artists - who in their respective ways are intervening through their chosen image-making technologies of artistic expression in response to cultural as well as geo-political issues are - set to showcase pieces that would engage and challenge the viewer.
 
They inlcude María Leguízamo (Colombia), Dzyadzorm, Ibrahim Mahama Kelvin Haizel, Aisha Nelson, Mawuenya Amudzi, Men on Black (Collective), Steloolive, Akwasi Afrane Bediako, Francis Kokoroko, Poku Mensah (Holland), Bright Ackwerh, Edwin Bodjawah, Kwabena and Afriyie Poku.  
 
Curated by Kwasi Ohene Ayeh, the exhibition is a contemporary one that takes an experimental approach with the aesthetic and political roles images play in the contemporary experience - especially those inherited via mass media, advertising and internet.
 
It equally reflects on various visual, auditory and gestural image-making technologies, processes and mediums including photography, video, text, sound, black box theatre, computer-aided designs, installation, sculpture and spoken word poetry.  
 
Ohene Ayeh articulates his ideas through writing, installation, site-specific and curatorial projects. A co-editor of the monograph "Ibrahim Mahama Exchange-Exchanger" (1957-2057), he is an ICI Curatorial Intensive alumnus and has participated in residencies in Senegal (Àsìkò International Art School organized by CCA-Lagos), UK (Gasworks), Colombia (Lugar a Dudas) and USA (The Village of Arts and Humanities).
 
Dr. Agyeman Ossei, Vanessa Akua Midie (Dzyadzorm) and Dr. Edwin Bodjawah will be panelists for a planned discussion programme that will be an integral part of the exhibition, which will run daily until Saturday March 10, 2018.
 
"Spectacles Speculations", which is being supported by blaxTARLINES KUMASI - a project space for contemporary art at the Department of Painting & Sculpture (KNUST), will also include off-site projects, discursive sessions and film screenings programmed between Accra, Kumasi and online platforms.
